Matt Waters is currently the Professor of Low Brass Studies at the Nanhai Conservatory of Music in Haikou, Hainan Province, China. In addition to holding both a graduate and undergraduate degree from the Herb Albert School of Music at the University of California, Los Angeles, he formerly held teaching positions in the music programs of Mater Dei Catholic High School, San Marino HS, Mt. Carmel HS, and Monrovia HS. Before his move to China, Matt performed with various ensembles in San Diego including The San Diego Symphony, The La Jolla Symphony, The Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra, Sea World’s Sea Street Band and Christmas Brass, and The Manny Cepeda Orchestra,
Matt spends way too much time in the gym pursuing his hobby of powerlifting and watching grown men and women put hundreds of pounds on their backs for no discernable reason.
In the past, he has been shown opening for The Rolling Stones at the Staples Center, performing on the hit TV series Glee, and has performed with Placido Domingo, Delfeayo Marsalis and the San Diego Symphony in concert. Past teachers include James Miller, Bill Booth, and Jim Prindle on trombone, Dr. Travis Cross and Dr. Thomas Lee in conducting, Patrick Sheridan in brass pedagogy, and Gordon Henderson in marching band show design. He is an alumnus of Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps, Alternative Percussion Ensemble, and the UCLA Marching Band.
